Battlefield Science as a Model: How to Start a Student Research Publication
Ch. 14 mentions this in passing, as the working proof that the chapter's argument isn't theoretical: “Battlefield Science, Volumes I and II, are student-edited and student-created science publications, published on Amazon, built around asking students to carry a real research question further than a single assignment usually requires — through the same claim-evidence-reasoning cycle, but aimed at a real reader instead of a rubric. Writing for an actual audience outside the classroom changes how carefully a student checks their own reasoning, in a way writing for a grade alone rarely does.” This page is the full version of that mention — a real how-we-did-it guide, so another teacher could build something like it at their own school.
Where this actually started
This didn't begin at Battlefield. It began at The Beacon School, a public high school in the Hell's Kitchen neighborhood of Manhattan built around performance-based assessment — portfolios and presentations in place of most standardized tests. Steve Stoll, a colleague there, was the one who pushed me to take student publication seriously as part of that model rather than as an extracurricular add-on: if the school's whole premise was that a portfolio of real work demonstrates learning better than a bubble sheet does, then a published, edited piece of student research was the strongest portfolio entry available. That became three editions of Beacon Science, produced with Teachers College Press — the university press affiliated with Teachers College, Columbia University, where I later earned my own Ed.M. in science education. That model of student publication was featured in Teachers & Writers magazine's November–December 2005 issue, in a profile of Columbia Teachers College's Student Press Initiative — Beacon Science was one of the programs named in it. Fifteen years after the first edition of Beacon Science, at Battlefield High School in Prince William County, Virginia, a student named Yash Sabharwal and I put together the first edition of Battlefield Science together. Yash went on to research recognized at the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair and, eventually, a Congressional Gold Medal — the Epilogue tells more of that story directly.
The mechanism changed twice in twenty years. A university press handled Beacon Science; Battlefield Science is self-published through Amazon. What didn't change is the part that actually does the teaching: a student's name on a cover, a real reader they've never met, and the discipline that comes from knowing an editor — not just a teacher grading a rubric — is going to read the work closely before it goes out.
Where the material comes from
A publication needs a steady supply of strong, finished student work, and there are three real sources worth building into how a class runs, not treating as separate projects bolted onto the curriculum:

The editorial structure: who decides what makes the cut
In a college journal, an editorial board usually makes the final call. In a high school, I've found the opposite balance works better: the teacher makes the final publication decision, and the student editorial board's real job is bringing forward work they think deserves consideration — including pieces the teacher hasn't seen yet. When a student on the board brings me an article they believe is strong, I approve it if it holds up, which in practice is most of the time; the board's judgment about what counts as good work is usually right, and being right about that is exactly the skill worth letting them practice. The reason the final call stays with the teacher, rather than fully with the student board, is accountability — a teacher's name is attached to what a school publishes under its banner, and a ninth grader shouldn't have to carry that responsibility alone. Serving on the editorial board is real work: reading drafts closely, arguing for what deserves a spot, defending that judgment to a teacher who might disagree — and it's become a genuinely strong college-application credential for the students who do it, distinct from having simply written an article themselves.
- Advanced-class work gets a heads-up from day one that strong final projects will be considered for the journal — this changes how carefully students write the final draft, before an editor ever sees it.
- The student editorial board reads broadly — not just their own class's work, but pieces from other sections, other teachers' classes, and science-fair projects they've heard about.
- The board nominates; the teacher makes the final call. A board member brings a piece forward with a short case for why it belongs; the teacher reads it and decides, in consultation with the student who nominated it.
- Accepted pieces go through at least one real revision round with the student author, the same claim-evidence-reasoning lens this site's CER and peer-review articles already use — publication isn't a rubber stamp on a final draft.

How to actually publish on Amazon
This is the part that sounds harder than it is. Amazon's self-publishing platform, Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP), is free to use and doesn't require a publisher, an agent, or any upfront cost. A teacher creates a free KDP account, uploads a formatted manuscript file and a cover image, fills in the book's title, description, and category, and sets a price — Amazon deducts a small per-copy printing cost from each sale of a paperback and pays a royalty on the rest. KDP assigns a free ISBN automatically if you don't already have one (Amazon then lists itself as publisher of record, which is fine for a school journal), and the whole submission goes through a review process that typically takes a day or two before the book goes live and becomes purchasable by anyone, including the students' own families. Royalties on a project like this are modest by design — a few dollars a copy at most — and the point was never the money. The value is the byline: a student's name on a real, purchasable book, next to the words “author.”

Alternatives to Amazon
Amazon isn't the only option, and it's worth knowing the others exist — especially if a school prefers not to route a student publication through a single retailer, or wants a physical product built differently than KDP allows:

The honest part
Ch. 14 names this directly, and it belongs here too: “That's the success worth naming before the harder part: most students still need far more scaffolding to get there than one unit provides, and building that scaffolding for every student — not only the ones already inclined toward independent research — is the work still in front of me.” A publication like this works best as a home for the strongest work a class produces, not as something every student in every section is expected to reach in a single semester. Building the on-ramp — the CER habits in Article #5, the peer-review structure in Article #7, the AI-literacy protocol in Article #9 — is what makes next year's list of nominees longer than this year's.
