Four closer looks

The pharmacist is the chemistry career most students already know, but the job has changed: pharmacists increasingly work inside hospital and clinic teams managing complex medication regimens, not only counting pills behind a retail counter. It requires a Pharm.D. (about six years total post-high-school) and pays the highest median wage on this list.

The chemical engineer takes a reaction that works in a beaker and figures out how to run it, safely and profitably, at the scale of an entire plant — the person responsible for the fact that a drug, a fertilizer, or a plastic can be made in the same quantity and quality a million times in a row. It is one of the highest-paid bachelor's-level careers on this entire page.

The forensic science technician analyzes physical evidence — DNA, drugs, toxicology, trace materials — and is sometimes called to testify about what that analysis actually shows in court. At 13% projected growth, it is the fastest-growing chemistry-adjacent career on this list, well above the economy-wide average, driven partly by growing caseloads and partly by advancing lab technology that makes forensic evidence more reliable and more central to trials.

The patent attorney is chemistry's least-visible career path: to sit for the patent bar exam and represent inventors at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, a person needs a science or engineering background plus a law degree. Lawyers overall earn a median $151,160, and intellectual-property law is one of the few legal specialties that explicitly requires the technical background a chemistry degree provides — a real option for someone who loves the subject and the precision of language equally.

What's actually being built in Virginia right now

This is not an abstract projection — it is happening on the ground. In 2025, Eli Lilly, AstraZeneca, and Merck collectively committed $12.5 billion in new investment to Virginia pharmaceutical manufacturing, including a $5 billion Eli Lilly plant in Goochland County (about 650 high-wage jobs) and Merck's new manufacturing lines at its Elkton site. Alongside that investment, the three companies and the Commonwealth are jointly funding a $120 million workforce-training initiative — described as the nation's largest advanced pharmaceutical manufacturing training center — spanning the Charlottesville–Richmond–Petersburg corridor, targeting 2,000 to 2,500 program graduates every year. In Richmond and Petersburg, Phlow Corp (domestic generic-drug manufacturing) more than doubled its workforce in the past year and raised $37 million in new capital, while AMPAC Fine Chemicals is expanding its Petersburg plant by $25 million and 156 jobs — chemists, QA/QC staff, and engineers among them. In Northern Virginia, the Fairfax health-and-biosciences sector, anchored by Inova's Schar Cancer Institute and DNA-forensics firms like Bode Technology and Parabon NanoLabs, already employs more than 180,000 people.

Virginia specifically: state occupational projections (2022–2032) show chemists in Virginia growing about 4% (1,410 to 1,470 jobs, roughly 100 openings a year) with a Virginia median wage of $98,460 — notably above the national chemist median. Forensic science technicians in Virginia are projected to grow 15% (550 to 630 jobs), a Virginia median wage of $72,460, and chemical engineers in Virginia are projected to grow 7% (410 to 440 jobs). Nationally, chemical manufacturing employment is projected to grow 3.5% and pharmaceutical/medicine manufacturing 5.4% over the decade — both faster than manufacturing overall, which is projected to be essentially flat.
