Bio Tool #34 · DE Bio 101 Unit 5 · Campbell Chapter 5
Chapter 5 asks two different kinds of question that happen to share one structure: what gets across a membrane, and how a message gets through one without crossing at all. Fifteen questions sort out which of the five ideas you already own. About thirteen minutes.
Nothing is submitted. No score leaves this iPad and I never see it. Answer honestly and the result is worth something.
Three questions on each idea. Reception and transduction are kept apart on purpose, because they fail separately and the second one is where this chapter usually costs people marks.
The outlined tiles are the ones worth a weekend. The filled ones you can skip.
Checkpoint Chapter 5 sits on the NOVA Canvas Quizzes tab. Unlimited attempts, highest score kept, and it shows the right answer after every try. Take it cold, work the drawings above, take it again. Nearly a quarter of its questions put a labelled diagram in front of you — a membrane with its parts marked, a U-tube, a transport protein mid-cycle — and ask what you are looking at, so practise reading those off a drawing rather than off a list of terms.
Two things in Unit 5 are built to be handled rather than read. The Signal Relay runs one signal at a time through three receptors and lets you switch off any step to see what stops. The Membrane Patch turns a piece of membrane over so you can name the parts from either side.
