Bio Tool #17 · Biology I Unit 1 · SOL BIO.2b
Nothing is submitted. Progress and what you type stay on this device, so a second sitting picks up where the first stopped. Tap any step number to open that step; a number lights up only for a step you have finished. iPad keeps the picture to fewer moving pieces so it stays smooth on a tablet; Computer draws a denser picture. Fill screen hides everything but the tool.
Goal: students build each group from its units, count the water at every link in both directions, sort molecules by job, and identify a group from its parts and from a food test.
Misconceptions it is built to surface: "carbon bonds only to carbon" (S1); a polymer named as a monomer, e.g. DNA (S2); "joining uses water up" (S2, S3); cell walls and insulation swapped between carbohydrates and lipids (S4); glucose and RNA confused from their drawings, and fructose taken for a lipid piece (S5); "a sweet food always turns Benedict's" (S6, DE).
Timing: about 30 minutes for all six steps, or S1–S3 one day and S4–S6 the next.
Remediation: S2 and S3 together are a 12-minute reteach of dehydration synthesis and hydrolysis; S4 and S5 are the reteach for "which group, which job".
DE link: S6 is a dry run of Lab 2 Day 1's controls; D11 and D12 are the lab's two hard ideas.
Suggested board prompt: "You built a chain of ten and counted nine waters. Where did the tenth go?"
